The Dunham Teacher Certification Workshop is designed for dance teachers/educators who wish to become certified Dunham Technique teachers. The curriculum covers technique, pedagogy, history and theory. This artist/scholar program is an exciting and rigorous process. Dancers engage in a yearly hybrid process which includes 5 months of online classes and a week-long in-person workshop in the summer, followed by our one week Dunham Technique Intensive. For those on the certification path, the Intensive is a crucial opportunity toward embodiment of the technique. For this reason, we encourage those attending the Certification Workshop to also attend the Intensive.

The program usually requires 3 to 4 years to complete all course work and an additional 1-2 years to fully develop the culminating portfolio and the teaching practicum.

The 2024 Dunham Teacher Certification in-person Workshop opens on Sunday, July 14th, with a Dunham Technique master dance class. The master class (included in the price of the Teacher Certification Workshop) and the Opening Ceremony bring the group together in preparation for embarking on a week of high-intensity focus on Dunham Technique. During the Workshop, we work on embodiment of the technique as well as the history, theory, philosophy and pedagogy. The workshop ends the following Saturday July 20th.

Please note: THE IN-PERSON WORKSHOP IS FOR DANCERS already engaged in the 2024 Dunham certification process, WHICH BEGAN IN JANUARY.

The Dunham Technique Intensive is a 5-day public Dunham Technique immersion experience. Dunham based classes will be offered each day – including 3 levels of Dunham Technique and 2 levels of Dunham based Haitian, West African, Jazz, Modern and more! It is open to the public and does not require previous Dunham training. It is ideal for both seasoned Dunham dancers and experienced dancers who want an introduction to Dunham Technique. This year, for the first time, we will be offering classes for beginner dancers . All classes will be taught by certified Dunham teachers.

Embedded in the Intensive, we offer the Educator Track. This is designed for dance educators interested in learning more about the teaching of Dunham Technique, and the history, theory and philosophies of the technique. It is ideal for those who would like to include Dunham more knowledgeably in their curriculum.

During the Intensive, dancers will have the opportunity to experience drumming, yoga, films, social time and more!

STAY TUNED for the intensive schedule!

The Institute for Dunham Technique Certification is dedicated to the legacy of Katherine Dunham and to the dissemination of the Dunham Technique. This is our purpose and our lifeblood. In alignment with Ms. Dunham’s philosophies, it is also part of our mission to keep the prices of our classes and our certification process as accessible as possible while still maintaining the integrity of our organization. We are primarily a volunteer organization; this volunteerism arises from our passion for this legacy. We know many in our community benefit from sliding scale exchanges which is reflected in our pricing for both the Certification Process and Intensive. At this time on the planet, our intertwined destinies are undeniable. For the long term sustainability and viability of the Dunham Legacy, we need the financial support of those who are able to offer it. We encourage you to give generously if you can. Not a penny goes wasted.

IDTC will continue to be mindful of the ongoing global pandemic and reserves the right to shift programming from in person or virtual to support the safety of all participants. Any shifts will be communicated using the contact information provided during registration.
We look forward to staying in touch!
