African Diaspora Dance Practitioner, Exercise Physiologist, Epidemiologist, & Evaluator
Sheila A. Ward is Co-Director of and professional dancer with Eleone Dance Theatre of Philadelphia, PA, a tenured Professor at Norfolk State University, the Trauma-Informed Healing-Centered Approaches Program Evaluator for the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Epidemiology, Division of Disease Prevention, a licensed PreK-12 Virginia Educator with endorsements in Dance Arts, Health and Physical Education, and Health and Medical Sciences, and a Registered Kinesiotherapist. Integration of her degrees in exercise physiology, epidemiology/public health, and dance, has served as the foundation to promote ‘Health Empowerment through Cultural Awareness,’ the guiding principle from which she conducts scholarly activities related to chronic disease prevention and management, injury prevention and rehabilitation, and African Diaspora dance for health and wellness. She has successfully received state, federal, and private funding for research and program implementation including authoring and implementing fourteen (14) dance-related grants. Her presentations and publications on the international, national, state, and local levels are extensive and varied. She is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, a Virginia Commission for the Arts Teaching Dance Artist, a consultant for the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning through the Arts, and Certified Instructors for Kariamu Welsh’s Umfundalai African Dance Technique and the Katherine Dunham Technique and Philosophy where she serves as the Pedagogy Chair for the Institute for Dunham Technique Certification (IDTC).
